Evapotranspiration Can Outpace Water
Replacement
At
night or during the hours of darkness, when
evapotranspiration has ceased, the continual
upward movement of water provides a ready
source of moisture to largely or completely
restore the turgor of plant leaves, date
palms, or citrus, for example, thus relieving
stress.
However,
during the months when rainfall is scarce
and soil water potential becomes progressively
lower, evapotranspiration during the day
can exceed the soil's ability to provide
the necessary amount of moisture for continuing
absorption of water at night.
This
situation invariably results in an appreciable
restriction of growth, and if continued,
cessation of growth, followed by irreversible
injury or death of the foliage.
WaterWorks
can have a profound effect in solving all
these problems.
